Delaware, New Jersey, and East Coast Shaken by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake

Delaware residents were surprised by the 4.8 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey that was felt across the state on Friday morning. Many took to social media to share their experiences, with people from all three Delaware counties commenting on the Delaware Emergency Management Agency’s Facebook page. Residents described glasses clattering, condos shaking, and windows rattling during the quake. Some even mistook the tremors for military activity near Dover Air Force Base. The quake was also felt upstate in Wilmington and Newark, with some residents finding the experience exciting, particularly one person from California who is accustomed to earthquakes. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at 10:23 a.m. and was also felt in Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Some individuals expressed lingering shock from the event.

The News Journal reporter Isabel Hughes contributed to the report, which highlighted widespread effects of the earthquake.
