Blue Delaware: The Political Report for July 4, 2024

A recent CNN poll shows that voters believe Democrats would have a better chance of winning the presidency in 2024 with someone other than Joe Biden at the top of the ticket. Biden’s approval rating has hit a new low of 36% following a shaky debate performance. In a general election matchup, voters nationwide favor Donald Trump over Biden by 6 points. The poll also finds Vice President Kamala Harris within striking distance of Trump.

In Arizona’s 1st District, a super PAC called Turn AZ Blue is running TV ads targeting Democratic candidate Marlene Galán-Woods, accusing her of being a “political opportunist” and formerly anti-choice. Galán-Woods, who has long supported abortion rights, is seeking to have the ads taken down. The PAC does not appear to be in compliance with campaign finance laws, as it has yet to register with the FEC.

In Utah’s 2nd District, the Republican primary remains unresolved, with Rep. Celeste Maloy holding a slim lead over Green Beret veteran Colby Jenkins. Jenkins needs the gap to fall below 0.25% to request a recount, and a final outcome may not be known for several weeks due to uncounted ballots.

In Florida’s 1st District, the Florida Patriots PAC is spending over $880,000 to tie Rep. Matt Gaetz to former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg, who pleaded guilty to sex trafficking. Gaetz is facing a primary challenge from Navy veteran Aaron Dimmock.

In Michigan’s 8th District, internal polling shows Republican nominee Paul Junge leading former Dow Chemical Company executive Mary Draves in the primary. On the Democratic side, retiring Rep. Dan Kildee has endorsed state Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet.

In Minnesota’s 7th District, an America Leads super PAC is boosting Rep. Michelle Fischbach ahead of her primary against Steve Boyd. Boyd unexpectedly prevented Fischbach from winning the GOP’s official endorsement at a party convention in April.
