Japan introduces new yen banknotes with advanced 3D hologram technology to combat counterfeiting.

Japan unveiled its first new banknotes in two decades, featuring state-of-the-art 3D hologram technology to combat counterfeiting. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hailed the new 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen bills as historic for their anti-counterfeit features. The bills highlight figures who represent Japanese capitalism, women’s equality, and scientific innovation.

The 10,000 yen bill showcases Eiichi Shibusawa, the “father of Japanese capitalism,” while the 5,000 yen bill features Umeko Tsuda, a pioneer feminist and educator, and the 1,000 yen bill portrays physician Shibasaburo Kitasato. The new bills also have larger print to aid the aging population in reading them.

The government plans to print nearly 7.5 billion new banknotes by March next year, with an estimated 1.6 trillion yen ($10 billion) in new bills entering circulation daily. While cashless payments are gaining popularity globally, Japan still heavily relies on cash for transactions. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized the importance of cash for safe and convenient payments.

The new banknotes are first being distributed to financial organizations, then to ATMs and stores. It may take some time for the bills to reach the general public. The currency already in use will remain valid, with older bills required for vending machines and bus fares. The new bills are expected to energize the Japanese economy and showcase the country’s rich history and innovative spirit.
