McDonald’s adjusts breakfast hours in Australia due to egg shortage throughout the country

Australia is currently facing an egg supply shortage due to outbreaks of Avian influenza affecting about 1 million egg-laying hens. As a result, McDonald’s has cut breakfast hours by 90 minutes, serving breakfast until 10:30 a.m. instead of midday. Supermarkets have implemented a two-carton limit per consumer, with Coles and Woolworths imposing restrictions in most states. The Australian government is directing supplies to areas with the greatest shortages and is responding to outbreaks of the H7 high pathogenicity avian influenza at 11 poultry farms. Rowan McMonnies of Australian Eggs reassured consumers that there are still over 20 million hens cared for by hundreds of farmers across the country. Food Standards Australia New Zealand stated that there is no evidence that the virus can be contracted through properly prepared food, and that it is safe to eat chicken meat and eggs. While the impact of avian influenza is being felt in the poultry industry, efforts are being made to ensure that there are eggs available for consumers. It is important to ensure that food is handled and cooked properly to prevent the spread of the virus.
