New addition to the zoo: Asian elephant joins the family

Johnson, a male Asian elephant, has recently arrived at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium all the way from African Lion Safari in Canada. This friendly new face, weighing 11,500 pounds, is settling in well at his new home and is already exploring his outdoor habitat. Johnson’s caretaker described him as laidback, confident, and gentle with other elephants, making him a great addition to the herd. He joins female elephants Rudy, Sundara (Sunny), Phoebe, and Phoebe’s young son Frankie.
His move was recommended through the AZA Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan, which aims to maintain a genetically diverse population of Asian elephants in North American zoos. The Columbus Zoo is committed to the conservation of Asian elephants and is actively involved in various projects to help save the species in their native range.
In addition to Johnson, the Columbus Zoo will also welcome another breeding bull, Raja, from the Saint Louis Zoo in 2025. These moves are part of a larger strategy to ensure the well-being and survival of elephants in professional care. The zoo is dedicated to providing a safe and enriching environment for its animals and remains committed to their welfare and conservation.
