Protesters with banner disrupt Tony-winning musical ‘Suffs’

A protest briefly disrupted a performance of the Broadway musical “Suffs,” a Tony Award-winning show about the suffragist movement. Protesters unfurled a banner with the slogan “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chanted “Cancel ‘Suffs!'” before being escorted out of the theater. The show’s representatives assured that the safety of the performers and audience was not compromised during the incident.

The protesters, described as “radical, anti-racist, queer feminists,” criticized the musical for being a “betrayal of the next generation of feminists” and promoting “rehashed white feminism.” The show’s producers, which include Hillary Clinton, did not directly respond to the group’s complaints, but the musical addresses the role of racism in the suffragist movement and highlights the contributions of Black women to the voting rights cause.

This incident follows another disruption on Broadway in March, when a climate activist group halted a performance of “An Enemy of the People.” The recent protests on Broadway highlight the intersection of social justice issues with the performing arts. Despite these disruptions, the show must go on, and Broadway continues to serve as a platform for important conversations about history, activism, and equality. “Suffs” and other shows on Broadway are indicative of a trend in modern theater to address and reflect on broader societal issues.
