Esports gaining popularity in Delaware high schools and colleges
Esports, or competitive video gaming, is gaining momentum in the world of high school and college sports in Delaware. Dr. Dorrell Green, superintendent of the Red Clay School District, acknowledges the increasing overlap between traditional sports and virtual sports. With gaming and simulation becoming essential for skill development in various industries, esports are being recognized as a legitimate form of competition.
Both Delaware and Delaware State Universities have established gaming centers on their campuses, offering partial esports scholarships. High school leagues are also on the rise, with the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association looking into incorporating esports into their programs.
Saint Mark’s High School boasts one of the most advanced esports centers among high schools in the state. The school has six teams and over 30 members competing in national leagues. Chris Ruffini, the team manager, emphasizes the educational aspect of esports, with plans to introduce gaming-related classes next year.
However, concerns about the addictive nature of video gaming are not ignored. Ruffini addresses these concerns by highlighting the benefits of organized team play, setting limits on screen time, and the physical workouts that college esports players undergo.
While debates continue on whether esports players should be considered athletes, the growth of esports in Delaware is undeniable. As the industry expands, it provides students with new avenues for competition, skill development, and career exploration. With a focus on balance, education, and teamwork, esports are establishing themselves as a legitimate form of sports in schools across the state.
