Hungarian Prime Minister Orban meets Russian President Putin in Moscow during uncommon European visit

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made headlines by becoming the first European leader to visit Russia and sit down for talks with President Vladimir Putin since Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in April 2022. Orbán’s visit comes as he tries to position Hungary as a mediator in the conflict in Ukraine, proposing a cease-fire to both Russia and Ukraine during a recent unannounced visit to Ukraine.

However, Orbán’s visit to Moscow has been met with criticism from European officials who view it as appeasement rather than a genuine effort for peace. European Commission spokesperson Eric Mamer stated that the visit was not about peace, while the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, emphasized that Orbán was not representing the EU during his discussions with Putin.

During the meeting, Putin outlined his vision for peace in the region, which includes the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from certain regions. Orbán noted that this was the fourteenth time he had met with Putin since 2009, demonstrating the close relationship between the two leaders.

Despite the backlash, Orbán’s press chief stated that the visit was part of a peace mission, as Orbán seeks to use Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council to advocate for an end to the fighting in Ukraine. While the visit highlights Hungary’s unique position in mediating between warring sides, it also raises concerns about the country’s relationship with Russia and its stance on the conflict in Ukraine.
