President Joe Biden sat down for his first television interview since his poor debate performance, seeking to reassure allies and voters in a high-stakes moment. During the 22-minute prime-time special with ABC, he displayed coherence but also a mix of denial, defiance, and dismissiveness.
In terms of denial, Biden denied that he was down in the polls to Trump and dismissed surveys showing that he’s losing the race. He also denied his low job approval rating and insisted that he is the same man who took office in January 2021. Despite unnerving Democrats, he said he won’t drop out of the race, even if asked by top Democratic leaders.
During the interview, Biden showcased defiance by stating that only “the Lord Almighty” could persuade him to step aside, despite challenges and suggestions to the contrary. He also discussed his future plans, including straightening out the tax system, expanding healthcare, and seeking to improve childcare and elder care.
Biden dismissed his poor debate performance as a “bad episode” and attributed it to being sick and exhausted. He took responsibility for the performance and refused to blame his staff or advisors. Despite speaking slowly and pausing at times, he emphasized that he lives a vigorous life and remains fit for a campaign and four more years as president. Throughout the interview, he contrasted himself with Donald Trump, calling him a pathological liar and emphasizing the importance of the character of the president in upholding the Constitution.
