March Madness Boosts Sports Betting Numbers in Delaware

Delaware’s sports gambling industry received a significant boost during March Madness last month, with over 761,000 bets being placed on sports in the state. Of these bets, more than 605,000 were placed through Delaware’s mobile app. Delaware Lottery Director Helene Keeley attributed this increase to the NCAA Tournament, noting that betting activity spiked up during game days and then tapered off slightly on non-game days.

While the official numbers for April are yet to be released, Keeley mentioned that the Masters golf tournament earlier this month also provided a bump in betting activity. The upcoming NASCAR race weekend in Dover, which features a race named after the BetRivers sports betting app used in Delaware, as well as the NFL Draft, are expected to further boost sports betting in the state.

However, Delaware’s sports betting figures are lower than neighboring states like New Jersey and Maryland, primarily due to population size and the availability of multiple mobile betting options in these states. Nevertheless, Keeley stated that customers and casinos in Delaware prefer having one platform for all online gaming activities.

Despite the current limitations, there is a possibility of expansion in the sports betting market in Delaware. State lawmakers recently introduced a bill to allow more than one mobile sports betting option in the state, which could potentially open up new opportunities for both customers and casinos. Currently, Rush Street Interactive through the BetRivers app is the sole online sports betting vendor in Delaware.
