The Schiffel’s Safety Scholars summer reading program is back for its fourth year, focused on bringing safety-themed messages to kids in partnership with local libraries. The program kicked off with a session on gun safety at the Unity Community Center with public defender Carlos Crawford and therapy dog Coco. They also visited the Delaware County District Library and Sunbury Community Library to educate kids on internet safety, with visits from therapy dogs Maverick and Otto. At the Powell Branch Library, therapy dog Rocky and Officer Berner joined in, while the Wornstaff Memorial Library in Ashley offered an adventure-themed summer with Indiana J as a guest. The program, funded by money seized from drug traffickers, provides safety-themed books and rewards to participants. Additionally, efforts to criminalize sextortion are progressing, with a bill passing unanimously in the Ohio House and moving on to the Senate. Melissa A. Schiffel, Delaware County prosecutor, expressed joy in reinvesting seized funds into the community and educating kids on important safety topics. The program continues to prioritize keeping kids safe while providing a fun and educational summer reading experience.
