Delaware Primaries Set to Be Competitive with Full List of Candidates Announced
Delaware’s candidate filing closed last week for the upcoming September 10 primaries, with many competitive races on the horizon. One of the most heated contests is the three-way Democratic nomination battle to succeed outgoing Governor John Carney. The candidates include Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, and National Wildlife Federation leader Collin O’Mara. Contested Democratic primaries for governor are rare in Delaware, making this race particularly exciting.
In the congressional races, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester is expected to easily replace retiring Sen. Tom Carper, while state Sen. Sarah McBride is poised to succeed Blunt Rochester. Blunt Rochester would be the first woman and first Black person to represent the state in the Senate, while McBride would be the first openly trans person in Congress.
In the House and Senate races, the majority of seats are uncontested for the opposing party, but there are several intra-party primaries. The Democrats hold a majority in both chambers, with Republicans aiming to win seats in order to shift the balance of power.
With the list of candidates finalized, the stage is set for an exciting primary season in Delaware. Stay tuned for more coverage on the various races leading up to election day.
