Democrats, donors, and celebrities urge Joe Biden to halt campaign

After a disastrous performance at a debate with Donald Trump on June 27, concerns over Joe Biden’s ability to run for reelection in 2024 have been growing among Democrats. A total of 27 Democratic politicians have called for Biden to exit the race, citing his slow reactions and moments of confusion during the debate. Even critical celebrity endorsements have been withdrawn, with George Clooney urging Biden to surrender his nomination in a recent op-ed in the New York Times. Despite these calls, Biden is still expected to be named as the Democratic nominee at the upcoming Democratic National Convention, unless he decides to step aside.

Possible candidates to replace Biden include Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Governor Gavin Newsom of California, Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky. However, many of these contenders have made it clear that they are not planning to run in 2024.

If Biden does decide to exit the race, delegates at the DNC could vote for one of these alternatives to become the Democratic nominee in August. However, if Biden does not step down, convention protocol dictates that delegates must maintain their support for him. Voters and Democrats will be closely watching Biden’s future actions, particularly as Donald Trump has secured the Republican nomination.
