Delaware’s unemployment rate in June saw a slight increase from the previous month, rising to 4%. This rate was also higher compared to the same time last year, which was at 3.9% in June 2023. The national unemployment rate in June was 4.1%, slightly higher than Delaware’s rate.
The area unemployment rates, which are not seasonally adjusted, also increased in June compared to May, with Wilmington and Dover seeing the biggest increases at 1.4% and 1.3% respectively. The number of unemployed Delawareans rose to 20,200 in June from 19,600 in May.
Nonfarm employment in Delaware was at 490,200 in June, down 100 from May. However, there has been a net gain of 8,000 jobs since last June, a rise of 1.6%, which is in line with the national numbers. Delaware has seen growth in sectors such as Government, Leisure & Hospitality, and Private Education & Health, with each seeing an increase of 2,000 or more jobs in the past year.
While the slight increase in unemployment and decrease in jobs numbers may be concerning, the overall trend shows a positive growth in employment opportunities in Delaware. The state’s economy has been supported by key sectors, and efforts to create more jobs and reduce unemployment rates continue to be a priority for government officials and business leaders.
