Outbreak of dog flu in Delaware leads to suspension of animal shelter transports

An outbreak of a contagious respiratory disease among dogs has had a significant impact on the Wilmington location of the Hockessin Animal Hospital (HAP), with around 30 infected dogs currently being treated in the facility. CEO Patrick Carroll reported that the first dog became ill in July and sadly had to be euthanized due to severe pneumonia. As more dogs fell sick, the facility is providing supportive care including isolation, fluids, antibiotics, and nebulizer treatments.

While the outbreak is currently confined to shelter facilities, state officials warn that the disease could potentially spread to other public places like boarding facilities, grooming salons, and dog parks. Pet owners are advised to watch for signs of illness such as lethargy, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. Vaccinations for kennel cough, adenovirus, and canine influenza are recommended to protect dogs from the disease.

The halt in out-of-state transports for animals has placed a strain on Delaware Valley animal shelters, with organizations like ACCT Philly offering incentives for fostering cats and dogs to relieve overcrowding. Veterinarians and caregivers are urging community members to support these animals by donating money or supplies, fostering animals, or contacting shelters to inquire about their needs. By coming together to assist these shelters, the community can help ensure that all animals affected by the outbreak receive the care and support they need.
