Trump and Ukraine’s Zelenskyy scheduled to have phone call on Friday

Donald Trump is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, almost five years after their first call led to Trump’s first impeachment. Questions remain about Trump’s support for military aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Trump has promised to settle the war if he wins the election, but has not provided specifics. Recently, he criticized the amount of aid going to Ukraine but also said Putin’s terms to end the war are unacceptable.

JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, has raised concerns in Kyiv due to his criticism of U.S. aid to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Vance, saying he is in favor of ending assistance to Ukraine. Zelenskyy, however, has stated that he is prepared to work with whoever wins the election, including Trump.

The relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy was strained after the former pressured the latter to investigate Joe Biden, leading to Trump’s impeachment. Biden, in contrast, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, providing significant aid. Trump criticized Biden for mistakenly introducing Zelenskyy as “President Putin” at a recent summit.

Zelenskyy has expressed a willingness to work with Trump if he becomes president, stating that they have had good meetings in the past. The phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy comes at a critical time, with ongoing questions about U.S. support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
