Disneyland employees vote to approve strike action

Workers at Disney’s theme parks in Southern California, including Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, have voted to authorize a strike, citing unfair labor practices during contract negotiations. The unions representing over 14,000 workers claim Disney has engaged in unlawful discipline, intimidation, and surveillance of union members. The unions stated that 99% of members voted in favor of a strike, but this authorization does not mean a strike will immediately occur.

The labor fight involves custodians, ride operators, and merchandise clerks, among others, who entered into negotiations with Disney in April. Charges of unfair labor practices were filed by over 675 workers against the company, which are being investigated by the National Labor Relations Board. The workers argue that Disney’s profits come from their hard work and that the company’s actions have made their fight for fair treatment even harder.

Studies have shown that a significant percentage of Disneyland workers struggle to cover basic expenses, with many facing food and housing insecurity. The unions representing the workers say that despite Disneyland’s branding as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” employees often experience economic hardship. The four unions involved in the negotiations include BCTGM Local 83, SEIU-USWW, Teamsters Local 495, and UFCW Local 324. The contract for Disneyland cast members expired in June, while the contract for Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney workers expires in September.

The last strike at Disneyland occurred in 1984, lasting 22 days. This potential strike would be the first at Disneyland in 40 years. Disney has not yet responded to the authorization of a strike.
