Former President Donald Trump held his first campaign rally since surviving an assassination attempt, delivering a two-hour speech filled with insults, false claims, and offensive language. The rally in Michigan saw Trump mocking President Joe Biden and attacking Democratic leaders while repeating baseless claims of election fraud.
Thousands of supporters turned out to show their support for Trump, who called for unity but then reverted to his usual divisive tactics during his speech. He criticized Democrats, touted his relationships with world leaders, and urged voters to deliver a “landslide that is too big to rig”.
During the rally, Trump also made threats against undocumented migrants and warned against election fraud, urging voters to ensure their votes are counted. The event marked the first time he and his running mate, JD Vance, appeared together on the campaign stage.
Meanwhile, President Biden remains in isolation after contracting COVID-19, with details of his return to the campaign trail pending. Opinion polls suggest a tight race between Trump and Biden, with the former facing pressure to end his reelection bid due to his age and recent debate performance.
Democratic strategist Arshad Hasan noted the aggressive tone of Trump’s speech and the turmoil within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s candidacy. While there is discussion about potentially replacing Biden, it remains unclear how this could be accomplished with the election nearing. Despite the challenges, Biden has indicated he plans to stay on as the Democratic nominee.
