Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei presides over funeral prayers for Hamas leader Haniyeh | Updates on Israel-Palestine conflict post mourning service

Tehran, Iran – Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran to pay their respects to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated in the capital earlier this week. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led funeral prayers at a memorial event, where Haniyeh’s body was honored before being flown to Qatar for burial. The procession through Tehran towards Azadi Square was attended by massive crowds, with Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf hailing Haniyeh as a voice for the Palestinian people worldwide.

The mood in Tehran was described as mixed, with the Iranian public expressing concern over potential retaliation leading to a regional war. Haniyeh was killed in a strike on his accommodation in Tehran, following his attendance at the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Khamenei and Pezeshkian vowed harsh consequences for Israel, while Hamas vowed to retaliate against what they called a cowardly act.

The assassination in Tehran came after Israel targeted and killed a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut, raising fears of a wider regional conflict. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the strikes a dangerous escalation and called for efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. The ongoing violence in the region has resulted in numerous casualties, with thousands killed and wounded in both Israel and Gaza.

Israel has declined to comment on the Tehran strike, as tensions in the region continue to rise following the recent string of assassinations. The international community is calling for a de-escalation of the conflict and efforts to reach a ceasefire to prevent further bloodshed.
