Three major projects are currently in competition to create Delaware’s first indoor pickleball facility, according to a recent report by The News Journal. The popular sport of pickleball, a combination of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has been growing in popularity across the country and now enthusiasts in Delaware are eagerly anticipating the arrival of an indoor facility.
The first project, proposed by First State Pickleball Club, aims to convert an existing warehouse in Bear into a 12-court facility. The club has already invested over $200,000 in the project and hopes to open the doors to the public soon. However, funding and zoning issues are currently holding up progress on this project.
The second project, led by the Delaware State Parks Foundation, plans to build a 16-court facility in Lums Pond State Park. The foundation has secured a $2.6 million grant from the state and hopes to start construction in the near future. The facility would not only provide a space for pickleball enthusiasts but also boost tourism in the area.
The third project, proposed by Diamond State Pickleball Club, is seeking to construct a facility in southern New Castle County with up to 20 courts. The club is aiming to find a suitable location and secure funding for the project in the near future.
All three projects have garnered support from local pickleball players and officials, who believe that an indoor facility would not only allow for year-round play but also help to grow the sport in the state. While there is still competition between the projects, all involved parties are hopeful that Delaware will soon have its first indoor pickleball facility.
