Bulgaria’s Attempt to Form New Government Fails, Prompting Another Snap Vote | Politics News

Bulgaria is set to hold its seventh parliamentary election in three years, following the failure of three political parties to form a coalition government. President Rumen Radev had tasked the small populist ITN party with forming a government, but they were unable to secure enough support from lawmakers. This comes after a series of inconclusive elections and revolving-door governments since 2020.
Radev must now appoint a caretaker prime minister and call for another snap election. The ongoing political instability has raised concerns about destructive processes and calls for a meaningful political debate and fair play in the upcoming weeks. Bulgaria, the EU’s poorest member state and one of its most corrupt, is in need of stable government to improve the flow of EU funds into its infrastructure.
The largest party in parliament, GERB, and the reformist We Continue the Change (PP) had both previously failed to form a stable coalition government after the June elections. The current situation reflects a pattern of political uncertainty and the need for consensus-building among the Bulgarian political parties.
