Afghanistan’s Taliban marked the third anniversary of their return to power with a military parade and speeches at the former US airbase in Bagram. The celebration comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country. Despite the Taliban’s victory over Western occupiers, their government remains unrecognised, with strict restrictions on women and a struggling economy.
Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund praised the Taliban’s victory over Western occupiers and emphasized the responsibility to maintain Islamic rule and protect the nation’s people and property. Many Afghans, including rugby player Samiullah Akmal, expressed optimism about the country’s future, citing independence and security. However, others, like 26-year-old Zalmai, highlighted the challenges facing Afghanistan’s youth, with widespread unemployment and uncertainty.
International aid groups have raised concerns about the growing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, with 23.7 million people in need of assistance. Women have faced significant restrictions under the Taliban’s rule, with limited access to education and employment opportunities. Alison Davidian, head of UN Women’s Afghanistan office, noted the stark contrast between the previous possibilities for women in Afghanistan and the current reality.
Despite attempts to revive the economy and address humanitarian needs, Afghanistan’s rulers continue to face international isolation and financial restrictions. The future of the country remains uncertain, with ongoing challenges for its population, especially women and youth, as they navigate the aftermath of decades of conflict and instability.
