Ohio Senator JD Vance, who is a former President Donald Trump’s running mate, avoided answering questions about whether Trump’s proposed “zero tolerance” policy on immigration would result in family separations during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” Vance emphasized the need to prevent illegal immigration before addressing the current issue, suggesting a focus on deporting violent criminals first. He criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for allegedly supporting policies that led to family separations and children living with criminals.
When Biden and Harris initially took office, Biden ended the zero-tolerance policy and established a family reunification task force that discovered over 5,000 separated families. The Biden administration later collaborated with a bipartisan group of senators on a comprehensive immigration and border security plan, but Republican support waned after Trump voiced his disapproval. Vance’s comments came after Trump’s recent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, where he also avoided addressing questions about potential family separations under his proposed policies, suggesting provisions would be made for mixed-status families without elaborating on what those provisions would entail.
