The campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are at odds over the upcoming U.S. presidential debate scheduled for next month. Trump expressed concerns about the bias of the previously agreed-upon ABC network and threatened to pull out of the debate entirely. Harris’s team is requesting that the candidates’ microphones remain open throughout the event to deal with Trump’s interruptions and lies in real-time.
Trump’s campaign initially agreed to muted microphones, as seen in the last presidential debate, but later expressed a preference for open microphones. Despite not preparing much for the debate, Trump believes he has been preparing for debates his whole life. Both campaigns have clashed over the format of the debate, with Trump wanting open microphones and Harris preferring muted microphones.
Harris secured the Democratic nomination after Joe Biden stepped aside and had previously agreed to the Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News. Biden’s own performance in the June debate triggered alarm within his party, leading to him ending his reelection bid weeks later.
The vice presidential candidates, JD Vance and Tim Walz, are scheduled to debate on Oct. 1 on CBS News. The clash over the debate format highlights the tense and competitive nature of the upcoming presidential election.
