Brazil’s Congress has taken action following a plane crash that killed 62 people earlier this month by forming a committee to oversee the investigation. The 37-person committee will track an inquiry by Cenipa, which investigates aviation accidents. The lower house is set to call upon key figures, such as Voepass President Jose Luiz Felicio Filho and Cenipa head Marcelo Moreno, to speak before the panel. While Cenipa is expected to release preliminary findings by September 6, the Congressional committee plans to hold hearings until December and issue a report in February.
The circumstances surrounding the crash, which involved an ATR 72-500 plane operated by Voepass, remain uncertain. Some experts have suggested that ice accumulating on the wings may have caused the pilot to lose control, a recurring issue with ATR planes in the past. While the committee seeks to prevent such tragedies from happening again, they have emphasized that their intention is not to carry out a witch-hunt.
The spokesperson for ATR stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to follow the developments. The tragic incident, which occurred in the town of Vinhedo north of Sao Paulo, is Brazil’s deadliest aviation accident in over a decade. With concerns surrounding aviation safety, the committee’s efforts are crucial in understanding the causes of the crash and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
