Harold Ingram, the principal of Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy in Wilmington, opened the school with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and block party on August 23. The school, the first new school in Wilmington in 50 years, was funded by $84 million in state funding and named after Maurice Pritchett Sr., a veteran city educator. The event was attended by hundreds, including state leaders and members of the community. Despite the celebration, speakers emphasized the need for continued improvement and results in education.
The school was built to serve up to 600 students from first through eighth grade and features state-of-the-art facilities, including a spacious foyer, classrooms, a dance room, a gymnasium, and an historical tribute wall to Maurice Pritchett. Community members praised the school for its design and emphasis on safety, with smaller bathrooms meant to provide safe spaces for students.
The Wilmington Learning Collaborative, led by Executive Director Laura Burgos, announced plans to provide support for the district’s city schools, with a focus on fostering innovation and success for all students. Maurice Pritchett, a beloved figure in the community who dedicated over 30 years to education, was remembered by speakers for his love and dedication to students. His wife, Juanita Pritchett, emphasized the importance of love in education and expressed confidence that the students of Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy will go on to positively impact the world.
