A special five-course dinner was recently held at the Grafton Correctional Institution in Ohio, showcasing the culinary skills of incarcerated men participating in a program by EDWINS. The event, attended by nearly 60 members of the public, was a first of its kind in the state’s history. Chef Brandon Chrostowski, the founder of EDWINS, emphasized the goal of reframing what’s possible in prison and giving inmates a second chance at life.
The ingredients for the meal were harvested from the prison’s garden, symbolizing growth and new beginnings for the participants. In addition to learning culinary skills, inmates in the program also receive certifications that will help them secure employment in the restaurant industry upon their release.
One inmate, Greg Sigelmier, shared how the program has been life-changing for him, providing opportunities and support that he never thought possible. He expressed his desire to continue with the program even after leaving prison, citing the housing and other opportunities that EDWINS provides.
The event and the EDWINS program highlight the importance of rehabilitation and reentry opportunities for incarcerated individuals, demonstrating that with the right support and resources, they can successfully reintegrate into society.
