Ukraine has issued a warning to Belarus, stating that any violation of its state border will be met with ‘all necessary measures to exercise the right to self-defense’. The warning comes as Belarus’ Armed Forces have been concentrating personnel and weaponry along Ukraine’s northern border. Kyiv has urged Minsk to withdraw forces to a distance greater than the firing range of Belarusian systems. Ukraine’s foreign ministry stated that any violation of its border by Belarus will result in the targeting of troop concentrations, military facilities, and supply routes in Belarus. The presence of former Wagner PMC troops in the area has also been noted.
The statement also highlighted the threat to global security posed by military exercises near the border, particularly due to the close proximity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Belarus had previously allowed Russian troops to use its territory as a launchpad for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine and Belarus share a 1,084 km-long border, and tensions between the two countries have been heightened by the recent military build-up.
The warning from Ukraine underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, with the potential for conflict between neighboring countries. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation of hostilities.
