Elia Group, a prominent transmission system operator in Belgium, has taken a significant step towards a greener future by developing its own platform to collect Scope 3 upstream emissions data directly from suppliers. This initiative aims to provide more accurate carbon footprint figures for reporting and identify opportunities for reducing emissions. By working with Flexso and using SAP’s Business Technology Platform, Elia Group was able to create a web application for their Scope 3 Accounting platform.
The new platform has enabled Elia Group to report their carbon footprint accurately for the first time in their 2023 non-financial report, with continued deployments planned until 2025. This tool has already provided insights into Scope 3 emissions, resource scarcity, logistical issues, and material origins. Interim CFO Marco Nix highlighted the platform’s role in driving data quality management practices and providing transparency on the company’s carbon footprint from investment activities.
In recognition of their efforts, Elia Group won the Transportation Titan Utilities category at the 2024 SAP Innovation Awards. Moving forward, the company plans to enhance awareness by offering precise carbon footprint assessments and innovative solutions to both buyers and suppliers. With a focus on delivering reliable data, Elia Group aims to encourage meaningful behavioral changes towards sustainability.
