Georgetown Council Postpones Decision on New Police Station and Public Works Facility Vote

Georgetown Town Council Delays Vote on Referendum for New Police Station and Public Works Facility

The Georgetown Town Council has decided to defer voting on a resolution that would authorize a referendum on building a new police station and public works facility. The decision was made to wait until the first meeting in October to further investigate potential issues and locations for both facilities.

At a recent meeting, most public comments were supportive of the project, but some expressed concerns about the location of the new police department, stating that it is not centrally located. Georgetown Police Chief Ralph Holm responded to these concerns by noting that officers have mobile workspaces in their cars and assured that it would not impact their ability to patrol the streets.

Mayor Bill West also defended the proposed location, stating that the police officers who were involved in planning the project did not raise any objections. He emphasized that there are limited parcels left in the town limits, making it difficult to find a more suitable location.

The estimated cost of the project is around $18 million, and the council plans to revisit the proposal at their October 14 meeting. Holm expressed appreciation for the community support for a new facility and stated that he would accept any decision made by the city regarding the location.

Overall, the council is taking a cautious approach in making a decision on this important infrastructure project, considering all factors and feedback from the community.
