Former US President Donald Trump is facing accusations of election interference after a revised indictment was released by federal prosecutors in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling. The indictment now focuses solely on Trump’s attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election and overturn his loss to President Joe Biden. Trump has been falsely claiming voter fraud affected the election. This is one of four indictments Trump is facing, with the first conviction being for falsifying business records in New York.
The Supreme Court’s ruling in Trump v United States granted presidential acts immunity against prosecution, which influenced the revised indictment. The reworked case has been slimmed down, removing references deemed protected by the court’s decision. The charges of conspiracy remain unchanged, with Trump accused of defrauding the United States, obstructing an official proceeding, and preventing legitimate votes from being counted.
Trump criticized the revised indictment on his Truth Social account, calling it a “ridiculous” attempt to resurrect a “dead” witch hunt against him. He accused the Justice Department of influencing the upcoming election by taking legal action against him. Special counsel Jack Smith defended the new indictment, saying it follows the Supreme Court’s instructions.
The case is expected to be ruled on by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, but it may not go to trial before the November election. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. These developments come as Trump continues his re-election campaign and denounces the criminal charges as political persecution.
