The upcoming primary elections in Kent County will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, featuring several competitive races. Early voting opportunities will be available on Aug. 28, 31, and Sept. 3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the Delaware primary, only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic races, and only registered Republicans can participate in the Republican contests.
One of the key contests is in State Representative District 29, where incumbent State Rep. William Bush is facing a Democratic primary challenge from Monica Shockley Porter. Both candidates agree that healthcare is a pressing issue for residents, with Bush focusing on increasing healthcare workers in Kent County and expanding access to screenings and affordable prescription drugs. Shockley Porter supports the creation of a Medicaid buy-in option and increasing treatment options for substance abuse and mental health services.
Another Democratic primary in the 34th Representative District will determine the candidate who will face Republican incumbent Lyndon Yearick. The Democratic contenders are Adewunmi “Ade” Kuforiji and Tracey M. Miller, who are both emphasizing the need for education, healthcare, and fiscal responsibility in government.
In the Kent County Levy Court District 5, incumbent County Commissioner George “Jody” Sweeney is being challenged by Susan Lanyon in the Democratic primary. Their priorities include addressing the budget deficit, affordable housing, and infrastructure development to support growth in the county.
Additionally, the Republican primary for Kent County Register of Wills features Colin Bonini and Susanne Whitney vying for the nomination. Both candidates aim to increase awareness about the services provided by the Register of Wills office.
Overall, the primary elections in Kent County offer voters the opportunity to choose candidates who will address critical issues facing the community.
