New series to delve into the opioid crisis in Strand

The Strand Theatre in Delaware is partnering with local organizations to address the opioid crisis through a screening of “Our American Family” and a panel discussion on September 11. This event is part of the Delaware Community Conversations: Meaningful Movies series, which aims to shed light on important issues affecting the community.

The screening will feature the film “Our American Family,” followed by a panel discussion with experts in the field of opioid addiction, including Melissa Ebling of Maryhaven, Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and Deanna Brant of the Delaware Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. The discussion will be co-moderated by Robbi Moore of the Strand and Dr. Chris Fink of Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Meaningful Movies initiative is a spin-off of the Strand Theatre’s Tuesday Night Series, which explores monthly themes through films. This initiative aims to make national issues more local and relevant by pairing movies with panel discussions.

The admission charge for the event will go towards supporting future innovative events like this. The initiative was made possible by charitable contributions from Angela Jackson, whose daughter passed away from an overdose in 2018.
