The families of American hostages being held by Hamas are urging the White House to consider a unilateral deal with the terrorist organization for the release of their loved ones. Talks within the Biden administration are ongoing about potentially negotiating with Hamas without involving Israel. Family members and some officials believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may not commit to an agreement with Hamas. Currently, there are four Americans believed to be alive and three others whose remains are sought by the U.S. The Biden administration previously discussed the possibility of a unilateral deal with Hamas if cease-fire talks with Israel failed. While some officials opposed this idea, the administration has explored possible prisoner exchanges with Hamas through Qatar. A current administration official stated that a unilateral deal with Hamas is unrealistic due to Hamas’ demands, which only Israel can fulfill. The U.S. remains focused on securing the release of all the hostages, including Americans, through negotiation involving Israel. In addition to a unilateral deal, the administration is considering offering a “take it or leave it” deal to Israel and Hamas. President Biden remains hopeful for a positive outcome in the negotiations.
