Footage of the motorcade rushing JFK to the hospital after he was shot to be auctioned

Newly emerged footage from Dallas showing President John F. Kennedy’s motorcade after he was fatally wounded will be auctioned off later this month. The 8 mm home film captures the motorcade on Interstate 35 speeding toward the hospital, with Secret Service Agent Clint Hill hovering over the president and Jacqueline Kennedy. The footage, stored in a milk crate along with other family films, was passed down to Dale Carpenter’s grandson, James Gates, who was shocked by what he saw. Hill’s precarious position on the back of the limousine stood out to Gates, prompting him to connect with Hill and his co-author, Lisa McCubbin Hill.

The auction house has released still photos of the footage but is not publicly releasing the interstate racing portion. Historian Farris Rookstool III, who has seen the film, believes it shows the rush to Parkland in a more complete way than other fragmented footage. He hopes that after the auction, it can be used by filmmakers. The curator at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, Stephen Fagin, notes that new material related to the assassination continues to surface, as seen with Jay Skaggs who walked into the museum in 2002 with a shoebox containing 20 images from Dealey Plaza. The auction will take place in Boston on September 28, offering a unique and valuable perspective on the tragic events of November 22, 1963.
