A team of ten birds of prey, including Gianna and Arya, have been enlisted to protect the Roman ruins of Pompeii from pesky pigeons that pose a risk to the archaeological excavations. These birds, which have been patrolling the archaeological park at least three times a week for the past two years, work to drive away the pigeons that nested in higher numbers due to the closure of the park during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
The pigeons not only drove away other species but also endangered the Roman ruins with their corrosive guano. To combat this issue, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii has adopted an ecological approach by utilizing these birds of prey as a natural and effective solution to protect the fragile heritage site.
Gianna and Arya, along with their fellow feathered protectors, have proven successful in keeping the pigeon population in check and preserving the historical integrity of Pompeii. The implementation of this unique solution demonstrates a commitment to conservation efforts while also highlighting the importance of maintaining the site for future generations.
Through the use of these ten birds of prey, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is setting an example for other heritage sites facing similar challenges. By embracing nature as a partner in preservation, they are able to ensure the longevity and protection of this remarkable piece of history for years to come.
