Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein underwent heart surgery on Monday after being moved from a New York City jail to a hospital due to health issues. His representative stated that Weinstein is in recovery at Bellevue Hospital’s intensive care unit, not in critical condition, but continues to deal with serious health problems. The surgery was performed to drain fluid from his lungs and heart.
Weinstein had previously been hospitalized in July for Covid-19, double pneumonia, and various chronic health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, and spinal stenosis. He was convicted of sex offenses in New York and Los Angeles, but his New York conviction was overturned in April due to a judge’s error. A New York grand jury is reportedly considering new charges against him.
Weinstein has denied non-consensual sexual encounters with over 80 women who have accused him of sexual assault or harassment. He was previously sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles and 23 years in New York, but the latter conviction was overturned on appeal. Weinstein’s current condition post-surgery has not been revealed, but his representative stated that he was in pain and needs ongoing medical attention for his health issues.
