President Judge Jan Jurden of the Delaware Superior Court has announced her decision to step down from the bench in February. In a heartfelt letter to Governor John Carney, Jurden expressed that her time on the court has been the best job she’s ever had. Jurden has been a trailblazer during her time on the Superior Court, serving as the court’s first female chief judge and spearheading initiatives such as the Mental Health Court in 2008, which identifies and serves those with serious mental health issues.
Additionally, Jurden has presided over the Veterans’ Treatment Court, drawing from her own experience as a veteran who served in the Army from 1979 to 1982. Beyond her judicial duties, Jurden has also been a respected professor at institutions such as the Widener University Delaware Law School and the University of Delaware.
Jurden’s departure marks the end of an era for the Delaware Superior Court, as she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, innovation, and dedication to serving marginalized populations. Her leadership has been instrumental in advancing the court’s mission of justice and fairness for all. Governor Carney now faces the task of appointing a successor to fill Jurden’s esteemed position on the bench. As Jurden prepares to transition into the next chapter of her career, her colleagues and community members alike express gratitude for her impactful contributions to the legal field in Delaware.
