The White Stripes, consisting of Jack White and Meg White, have filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump for using their hit song Seven Nation Army in a campaign video without permission. The video, posted by Trump staffer Margo McAtee Martin, showed the Republican nominee boarding a plane with the song playing in the background.
Jack White had previously warned the campaign not to use his music, threatening legal action. The lawsuit seeks significant monetary damages and alleges copyright infringement, as the campaign did not seek permission to use the song.
This legal action is part of a broader trend of artists disavowing Trump’s use of their music in his campaigns. Universal Music had recently served a legal notice over the unauthorized use of Abba songs. Trump is also facing lawsuits from the estates of Isaac Hayes and Eddy Grant for unauthorised use of their music.
In their lawsuit, the White Stripes argue that Seven Nation Army is one of the most well-known and influential musical works of all time, and that Trump has used it to generate support for his campaign without their permission. They also state that they vehemently oppose Trump’s policies and actions, both during his presidency and as a candidate for a second term. The Trump campaign has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
