Actor and singer Tyrese Gibson was ordered to jail in Georgia for failing to make child support payments exceeding $73,000. The court found him in contempt and ordered his incarceration until he paid the purge amount or further court order. Gibson, who owes child support to his ex-wife Samantha Gibson, is legally appealing the monthly payment amount set by the court. His ex-wife’s lawyer stated that Gibson has rarely made full child support payments since late 2022 and has been held in willful contempt for the third time. Despite attempts to reach personnel at the Fulton County Jail, it was unclear if and for how long Gibson was detained. Following the judge’s order, Gibson’s attorneys appealed the decision less than 10 minutes later.
Gibson’s ex-wife filed for divorce in 2020, and they have a daughter born in 2018. Gibson’s child support payments were the same for his daughter as they were for another child from a previous relationship. Gibson posted on social media that being arrested was traumatic and questioned why the judge and his ex-wife’s lawyer seemed to hate him. His representatives did not comment on the situation.
