Carney Victorious in Wilmington – Blue Delaware

In a surprising turn of events, Governor John Carney has defeated former Wilmington Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter in the Democratic primary for mayor of Delaware’s largest city. Carney’s victory, with a 54-46 margin, secures his position as the Democratic nominee without any opposition in November. If elected, Carney will be the first sitting American governor to become mayor of any city.

Carney, who previously served as Lt. Governor and as a U.S. House Representative, beat out his opponent in a one-on-one race. Political analysts had expected a different Democratic candidate to succeed in the race, but Carney’s victory sets him up to take over from retiring Mayor Mike Purzycki.

The outcome of the race was particularly surprising given the racial and demographic dynamics at play, with many expecting the black majority city to elect a candidate who was not another developer-friendly white male. Carney’s win defied expectations and highlights the shifting political landscape in Delaware.

Historically, governors have successfully transitioned to mayor roles in other cities, such as Jerry Brown in Oakland in 1998. However, not all former governors have been as successful, as seen in Ben Cayetano’s loss in Honolulu in 2012. Carney’s victory sets him on a path to becoming mayor of Wilmington and marks a significant moment in Delaware politics.
