Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump showed civility by shaking hands at a ground zero ceremony commemorating the 9/11 attacks, where they stood near each other alongside other political figures. A woman at the event criticized President Joe Biden for a remark he made about “doing 9/11” which she found flippant. Biden and Harris were present to honor the lives lost in the attacks and support the families still grieving. Following the ceremony, Trump and his running mate JD Vance visited a fire station and financial services firm affected by the attacks, showing their support and gratitude for the first responders and victims. Meanwhile, Biden and Harris traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Flight 93 memorial site, where an attack on the U.S. Capitol was believed to have been prevented. Later, they attended another 9/11 event at the Pentagon. The candidates traditionally refrain from campaigning on this anniversary but participate in memorial events to pay their respects. In 2016, Trump and Hillary Clinton attended a similar event, where Clinton faced criticism for appearing unwell. In 2020, Trump and Biden both attended the 9/11 Memorial & Museum event, with Biden consoling family members while Trump delivered a speech. Last year, Biden visited all three memorial sites on the 20th anniversary, while Trump made stops at a police station and firehouse, marking the day with a video statement.
