Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride has secured the Democratic nomination for the state’s lone U.S. House seat, bringing her one step closer to potentially becoming the first openly transgender member of Congress in the United States. McBride, who has represented Delaware’s 1st Senate District since 2020 and won reelection in 2022, easily defeated her Democratic challengers in the primary with nearly 80% of the vote.
In her victory speech, McBride emphasized the importance of the upcoming general election and highlighted the stakes involved in the race for Delaware’s U.S. House seat. She pointed out the presence of “MAGA extremists” on the ballot in November, underscoring the significance of the outcome.
McBride is now set to face retired State Police officer and construction company owner James Whalen in the general election. Whalen, who pulled off an upset victory in the Republican primary by defeating the GOP Party-endorsed candidate, will be challenging the Democrats’ decade-long hold on the U.S. House seat.
With the general election approaching, all eyes will be on the race between McBride and Whalen as they vie to represent Delaware in Congress. If successful, McBride will make history as the first openly transgender member of Congress, a milestone that holds significant implications for LGBTQ representation in the nation’s legislative branch.
