Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride made history as she was sworn in on Tuesday, becoming the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the country. McBride, 30, took the oath of office in a private ceremony due to COVID-19 restrictions, with plans for a public celebration to be held at a later date.
McBride, a Democrat, ran unopposed in the November election and won with over 73% of the vote. She now represents the state’s 1st Senate District, covering parts of Wilmington, Delaware. She is the first openly transgender state senator in Delaware and the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the United States.
In her acceptance speech, McBride thanked her supporters and emphasized the importance of representation in government. She stated, “I am mindful of the history-making nature of that, and as much as that signifies progress, it also reinforces how much barriers there still are to truly lived equality.” McBride has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights, working with organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and the LGBTQ Victory Fund.
McBride’s election has been hailed as a significant milestone for the LGBTQ community and a step forward in promoting diversity and inclusion in government. The president of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, which endorsed McBride, praised her historic win, saying, “Sarah’s overwhelming victory is a powerful testament to the growing influence of transgender leaders in our politics and society. Her voice is urgently needed in a state legislator.”
As she begins her term in office, McBride is committed to advancing legislation that prioritizes issues such as healthcare access, workers’ rights, and racial justice. With her new role, she hopes to continue advocating for marginalized communities and working towards a more equitable society.
