The Israeli defence minister has warned that Hezbollah will “pay an increasing price” as Israel intensifies attacks on southern Lebanon, launching dozens of air raids. The attacks have targeted towns in the Jezzine area, with Israeli warplanes striking Hezbollah launchers and other infrastructure. Israeli leaders have indicated a potential larger military operation against Hezbollah to stop cross-border attacks and allow Israelis to return to homes near the border. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has promised retaliation for recent device attacks against its members in Lebanon and Syria. The White House has expressed support for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to de-escalate tensions in the region. A preliminary investigation by Lebanese authorities found that the devices used in the attacks were implanted with explosives before arriving in the country and were detonated via electronic messages. The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has been ongoing since Israel launched an assault on Gaza in October, resulting in casualties on both sides. The recent escalation has also led to the killing of key commanders on both sides, triggering fears of further escalation in the region.
