Russia brandishes nuclear threats as Ukraine decimates its arsenal | Latest updates on Russia-Ukraine conflict

Russia has updated its nuclear response doctrine in response to the threat of long-range attacks from Ukraine, which recently demonstrated the devastating effects such attacks can have on Moscow’s conventional warfare efforts. President Vladimir Putin outlined the new policy, stating that a massive enemy aerospace attack could trigger the use of nuclear weapons. The threat profiles specifically target Ukraine, a non-nuclear state supported by nuclear-armed nations like the UK, France, and the US.

Ukraine has used drones to attack Russian logistics hubs, causing significant damage to ammunition depots. The attacks have shown the vulnerability of Russian rear supply depots and highlighted the impact of Western restrictions preventing Ukraine from using certain weapons against Russia. Ukraine has sought to use advanced weaponry to counter Russian bombers dropping glide bombs on its territory, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.

Following the attacks, the European Parliament voted to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons, a decision that Russia warned could lead to a nuclear world war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of planning attacks on nuclear power plants and infrastructure. Ukraine has continued to develop its drone capabilities, aiming to produce millions of drones in the coming years.

In response, the EU has proposed a loan to help Ukraine expand its drone production capabilities. The loan, part of a larger pledge from the G7, would significantly boost Ukraine’s defense industry. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides exploring new technologies and strategies to gain the upper hand.
