Italian President Sergio Mattarella highlighted the strong relationship between Rome and Berlin during a three-day state visit to Germany. Addressing the importance of a united EU to tackle international challenges, Mattarella emphasized the deep friendship between Italy and Germany, stating that it was necessary, sensible, and close to their hearts. He warned against the dangers of political populism and asserted that peace in Ukraine should not equate to submission.
Mattarella arrived in Germany with his daughter and met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss European issues. He also visited the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat in Bonn to attend a conference on climate change cooperation between Germany and Italy.
The President will attend a service in Italy to mark the 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre, where Waffen SS troops killed at least 770 Italian civilians in 1944. Mattarella expressed his gratitude for the joint commemoration with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, acknowledging the deep wounds left by the atrocities committed by the SS and Wehrmacht in Italy.
The visit highlights the commitment of both countries to strengthening their partnership and working together to address pressing issues, such as climate change and historical remembrance. Mattarella’s message of unity and peace resonates as both leaders honor the memory of the victims of the Marzabotto massacre and pledge to continue fostering cooperation between Italy and Germany.
