Delaware Memorial Bridge Toll Increase Proposed for Cash Users
Drivers who do not use E-ZPass to pay their tolls on the Delaware Memorial Bridge may soon face an increase in fees. The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is considering raising the toll from $5.00 to $6.00 for cash-paying drivers as part of an effort to encourage more drivers to switch to E-ZPass.
According to DRBA Executive Director Thomas Cook, current E-ZPass users will not be affected by the proposed increase, and the current rates will remain in place until at least January 1, 2027. Neighboring New Jersey is transitioning to cashless tolling, and Delaware may follow suit to avoid potential revenue losses.
To gather public input on the proposed toll hike, DRBA will hold two public hearings. The first will take place on Tuesday, October 8 at the Vincent A. Julia Center near the bridge’s toll plaza in Delaware. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, October 10 at Salem Community College in Carney’s Point Township.
The goal of the proposed toll increase is to incentivize drivers to switch to E-ZPass, which is a more efficient and cost-effective way to pay tolls. By encouraging more drivers to use E-ZPass, DRBA hopes to streamline toll collection and minimize revenue losses associated with cash payments.
