Delaware Steps in to Assist North Carolina with Hurricane Recovery Efforts

A team from Delaware is assisting with response and recovery efforts in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Deployed by the Delaware Emergency Management Agency and Delaware State Fire School, the Swift Water Rescue Team is conducting search and rescue missions to locate individuals and assess neighborhoods for hazards. The team, consisting of 13 members, is equipped with boats, trucks, and supplies to handle the challenging situation in Linville, North Carolina. Director of DEMA, A.J. Schall, describes the work as meaningful but tough, with long days for the team. Hurricane Helene, a category 4 storm, caused widespread destruction in Florida before moving through Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, leaving over 100 people dead and millions without power. Thousands are believed to be missing, while many are stranded by floodwaters. The Delaware team’s 10-day mission could be extended or shortened based on the arrival of additional assistance in the area. Their efforts in North Carolina demonstrate the collaborative response to natural disasters, as states work together to support those affected by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene.
