The latest data released by Eurostat shows that the eurozone unemployment rate remained stable at 6.4% in August, with Greece, Spain, and Sweden having the highest rates of unemployment. Across the EU, the unemployment rate was 5.9% in August 2024, with more than 13 million people without jobs. While this is a slight improvement from June and July, where the rate was the same, it has decreased by 0.1% from August last year.
In terms of youth unemployment, there were over 2.7 million unemployed individuals under the age of 25 in the EU in August 2024, accounting for 14.3% of the bloc. Spain, Sweden, and Estonia have the highest rates of youth unemployment, while Germany, Malta, and the Netherlands have the lowest.
Additionally, more women are unemployed in the EU compared to men, with a 6.1% unemployment rate for women and 5.7% for men. Although the rate for women has remained stable, there has been a decrease in men’s unemployment by 5.8% from July. The highest rates of female unemployment are in Greece, Spain, and Sweden.
Overall, the latest unemployment data highlights both positive and concerning trends within the EU and eurozone. While there have been slight improvements in the overall unemployment rate, countries like Greece, Spain, and Sweden continue to struggle with high levels of joblessness, particularly among young people and women.
